They get to see it do some horrible things to some native monsters/defenders/tribespeople/whatever and get to see it show terrible judgement by wasting a turn obliterating a squirrel or something. But if it makes sense in the reality of the game maybe have the players come upon one earlier. You mentioned the zombie would be summoned in, so not a lot of time to stop and observe necessarily. If they're new and especially unfamiliar with the beholder may I suggest giving them a demonstration, in game. Make the encounter a game of "don't get tagged by the beholder zombie". Just make sure the team knows that they should be scared of it and that the beholder won't see through tricks. <3 :)ĭisintegration beam is definitely scary. Basically any trick you can think of it can't think a way out of. Have strong fighter pick large piece of rubble to use as cover and approach it with that for safety while rogue keeps popping up a sock cloth dummy (or even just his hat) from the top of the mobile rubble to draw fire. Illusion or someone with good saves leading into an especially obvious trap or ambush. Summon up a mirror and get beholder to attack that monstrosity.
